ANDREAS MALAKASIS
KNIFE MAKER
My name is Andreas malakasis (Balomenos). I was born in Athens but I live in Lefkas, where my family comes from. I have been working making knives, and especially with making of traditional lefkadian knife (porsaniko), for the last 10 years.
It is a long-lasting tradition which goes back to 1684-1789, when Italians and especially Venetians, occupied the island of Lefkas.

The making of knives is totally based on the tradinional way, with the use of improvised equipment, as I wish to contribute to the preservation, as well as the continuation of a long-lasting and unique tradition and its techniques.
The handles of the knives are made from brass while the blades are made with forged steel 5160-52100.
I was taught the technique of the lefkadian Knife by one of the last old craftsman, Aristotelis Vlachos (Zloumis), whom I deeply respect and thank.I
